Privacy, also known as confidentiality, is a fundamental aspect of ethical and effective counseling. As a standard practice, we uphold the confidentiality of information shared during sessions, unless we have your written consent to disclose specific information.
Exceptions to Confidentiality:
There are situations where we are legally or professionally obligated to disclose information without your permission. These exceptions include:
a. Imminent Harm to Self: If you disclose plans to cause serious harm or death to yourself and we believe there is an immediate risk, we are required to inform relevant parties to ensure your safety.
b. Imminent Harm to Others: If you disclose plans to cause serious harm or death to someone else and we believe there is an immediate risk, we must inform the individual at risk.
c. Risk of Harm: If your actions pose a risk of serious harm to yourself or others, even unintentionally, we may need to involve other professionals to ensure safety.
d. Disclosure of Abuse: If you disclose current or past physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, we are mandated by law to report this to the State of Florida Department of Children and Families.
e. Involvement in Legal Proceedings: If your counseling information is requested for a court case, we will not disclose information without your written consent, unless mandated by the court. We will endeavor to protect your confidentiality within legal constraints and inform you if disclosure is required.
